Most rays like to lay flat on the sandy sea floor or hide under the sand. But the eagle ray loves freedom. It spends its entire life swimming continuously in the open water. Its beautiful pointed wings are shaped just like the wings of a bird. This smart design helps them swim across huge oceans without getting tired.

When you watch them from below, you will see something very strange. Their bottom side looks like a smiling human face or a friendly ghost! Those face-like holes are actually their gills and breathing vents, which help them get oxygen efficiently even when digging in the sand.
